San Juan County students in grades 10–12 have an opportunity to win cash prizes and represent the county in a statewide conversation regarding artificial intelligence in education. The Shaping Utah’s AI Future Essay Contest invites students to propose specific policies for AI use in Utah schools, according to the San Juan School District.
The contest asks students to address topics such as when AI should be allowed in schools, how student data should be protected, and which decisions should be made by state officials, school districts, schools, or teachers. Essays must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words and are due by Oct. 1.
Cash prizes are available for the top three essays, with first place receiving $1,000, second place receiving $500, and third place receiving $250. Winners and Senate district delegates will be announced on Oct. 15.
One student from each of Utah’s 29 Senate districts will be selected to attend the Utah Student AI Policy Congress at the Utah State Capitol on Nov. 20–21. Delegates at the event will debate AI proposals, participate in student caucuses, and vote on a Utah Student AI Policy Resolution to be presented to state policymakers.
The contest is open to students in grades 10–12 attending public, charter, or private schools, as well as microschools and homeschool programs.
San Juan School District is encouraging eligible students to participate to ensure San Juan County has a voice in decisions regarding the future of AI in education.
