Daily Herald sports writers Darnell Dickson and Brandon C. Gurney released the latest Utah Valley top five rankings for football and girls volleyball on October 19. Because girls soccer has reached the semifinals, the weekly rankings focused exclusively on football and girls volleyball.
In the football rankings, Skyridge holds the number one spot with an 8-1 record and has won eight consecutive games since an opening loss to Mountain Ridge. Orem is ranked second at 7-2, seeking a repeat 5A title while West holds the number one seed. Springville follows in third at 7-2, noted for having playmakers on both sides of the ball. Provo is ranked fourth with a 6-4 record and an average of 54 points during a four-game winning streak. Salem Hills rounds out the top five at 8-2, with their only losses occurring against 5A Spanish Fork and Provo.
The girls volleyball rankings feature Orem in the top spot at 23-3, currently on a 22-game winning streak. Pleasant Grove is ranked second at 22-3; a victory against Payson on Tuesday would result in a perfect 12-0 Region 7 record. Skyridge is ranked third with a 21-6 record, with a finale against American Fork scheduled for Tuesday. Provo sits in fourth place at 23-3, with a regular season finale against Orem scheduled for Thursday. Lone Peak is ranked fifth at 16-10 and is noted as the only Utah team to defeat top-ranked Corner Canyon (6A) this season.
