A mock crash scenario was held at Wasatch High School to help students understand the dangers of distracted driving. The event allowed students to watch a simulated crash unfold and witness the consequences of an incident where one student dies due to distracted driving.
The simulation included an audio presentation depicting students driving distractedly and ultimately getting into an accident. Following the crash, officers checked victims to determine the seriousness of their injuries. After determining there was a fatality, extrication personnel worked to free the survivors.
The scenario also depicted the legal and personal aftermath of a crash. The driver, shown to be driving distractedly, was arrested and sent to jail. Additionally, the simulation included a funeral for the young man killed by the distracted driver, where friends acted as pallbearers and the victim's father spoke to attendees.
The event was cosponsored by several organizations, including the Wasatch County Sheriffs Office, Heber City Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol, Wasatch County Fire and EMS, Heber Valley Funeral Home, and the Wasatch County Health Department.
During the simulated funeral, the victim's father told attendees that no parent should have to go through such an experience and stated that no text or phone call is worth someone's life.
