A driver was killed and a passenger was critically injured following a head-on collision between a Utah Transit Authority bus and a sedan on Redwood Road in Salt Lake City, according to a report published August 31.
Salt Lake City police Sgt. Greg Wilking stated the accident occurred just before 2 p.m. near 1050 South. A gray sedan traveling south crossed into the northbound lane and struck the bus, which was traveling north.
The male driver of the sedan died at the scene. A front-seat passenger from the car was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Four individuals from the bus were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, while additional passengers received treatment at the scene. The bus driver was able to walk away from the crash.
First responders used the Jaws of Life to remove an occupant from the damaged sedan. Witnesses reported hearing a loud boom during the collision and observing injured passengers being treated along the side of Redwood Road.
Investigators have not yet determined if speed or impairment contributed to the crash or why the sedan crossed into the opposite lane. Police officials stated they intend to review toxicology results, video from the bus, and surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
Authorities used drones and a 360-degree scanner to reconstruct the collision scene. Redwood Road was closed in both directions for several hours while investigators processed the area.
