A wave of brush and grass fires across Northern Utah has triggered multiple evacuations and significant property damage over the past several weeks, stretching from Davis County to Zion National Park. While crews have successfully contained several recent blazes in Parleys Canyon and Kaysville, officials remain focused on managing risks from previous burn scars as monsoon storms approach the region.
Davis County Fire Destruction
In Davis County, a grass fire ignited in a field situated between the Ridgewood Estates Manufactured Home Community and the Weber State University Davis campus recently caused substantial destruction. According to reports from one week ago, the fire destroyed at least one home and left several other structures damaged. The blaze forced the evacuation of multiple residents living within the mobile home community during the incident.
Canyon and Corridor Blazes
Recent fire activity has also been'])) reported in the canyons and near major transit corridors. Four days ago, crews managed to contain a brush fire that burned half an acre of land along eastbound Interstate 8 and in Parleys Canyon. The fire ignited in the grass near the highway before firefighters could bring it under control.
In Summit County, a small one-acre brush fire occurred two weeks ago, causing disruptions to both Interstate 80 traffic and Union Pacific railroad operations. Similarly, a fire in Kaysville prompted evacuations near the East Mountain Wilderness Park two weeks ago as firefighters worked to protect nearby residential areas.
Zion and Sandy Evacuations
In Southern Utah, the Mesa Fire recently impacted the area near Zion National Park. Three days ago, evacuation warnings were issued after a brush fire ignited in the Kolob Terrace Road area. The fire was mapped at approximately 6 acres.
Further north, a fire near Dimple Dell Lane in Sandy caused significant concern for local residents. One month ago, a grass fire ignited near the Dimple Dell area, leaving one home under an evacuation order even after firefighters successfully contained the flames.
Provo Flood Mitigation
Provo city leaders are preparing for incoming weather following the completion of a new debris channel. As monsoon storms move into Utah this weekend, officials stated they are better prepared to protect neighborhoods located near the Buckley Draw burn scar.
The project follows a period of uncertainty regarding the area's safety. Approximately nine months ago, Provo City Engineer Gordon Haight noted that the release of a debris flow report for the Buckley Draw Fire had been delayed. This infrastructure development aims to mitigate the impact of potential debris flows in the wake of previous fire activity.
Additional Regional Fire Activity
Other recent fire incidents include a wind-fueled brush fire in Farr West three weeks ago that destroyed a house and an outbuilding, with the residence considered a total loss. In the Lakeshore Drive area of North Tooele, a fire three weeks ago threatened more than a dozen homes, burning fences and outhouses but causing no direct damage to the residences.
Additionally, a large brush fire ignited above Slate Canyon in Provo, south of Y Mountain, approximately two weeks ago. This fire occurred north of the site of the 2025 Buckley Fire, adding to the complex landscape of recent burn scars in the region.
Ongoing Environmental Risks
As summer temperatures remain high, with forecasts predicting peaks near 99 degrees for much of the region, fire officials continue to monitor high-risk areas. The combination of recent burn scars and incoming monsoon moisture presents a dual challenge of managing existing fire risks while preparing for sudden debris flows.
