Taufer Park has been selected as a Reimagine Neighborhood Park to receive funding from the Parks, Trails, & Open Space General Obligation Bond, according to a notice on the Salt Lake City website. The bond was approved by voters in November 2022 and is intended to invest in underutilized parks to increase access to quality green spaces.
Located in District 4 in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, the park is currently in phase 6 of the project, which involves design and document review. The project follows a series of community engagement efforts, including a public lands needs assessment in 2020 and a round of public engagement in the summer of 2023. A survey regarding the park closed on October 4, 2024, and officials are reviewing that feedback to create a final design.
Construction for the project is anticipated by summer 2026, though this timeline is subject to change. The completed project is expected to feature new and improved amenities prioritized by local residents.
In June 2024, more than 100 Delta volunteers and the local community assisted in building a KABOOM! playground at the park. The project was a partnership between Delta, the Utah Jazz, and the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands. The new playground includes a multi-dimensional play structure with a swing set, a zipline, and two slides.
During the playground ribbon cutting, Delta presented a $10,000 check to the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands and Taufer Park to assist with long-term maintenance. The contribution was presented by Blake Green, Director of Airport Operations in Salt Lake City.
Taufer Park is located at 680 S 300 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. The park is named in honor of Justin Edward Taufer, who was awarded the Robert P. Connelly Medal for heroism following his death in 1977.
