Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Patriotic Service of America’s Freedom Festival held at the BYU Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. During the service on June 28, 2026, Elder Rasband spoke about the divine purpose behind the preservation of the United States.
He stated that Jesus Christ serves as the captain for the people and that the Lord preserved this promised land for the great unfolding of the gospel in the last days. He noted that the land serves as a stepping stone to eternal life if people live faithfully.
Reflecting on his youth as a Boy Scout, Elder Rasband shared memories of participating in flag ceremonies and learning to be a patriot. He highlighted the significance of the phrase one nation under God from the Pledge of Allegiance.
Drawing from religious texts, Elder Rasband discussed how the Lord has historically protected promised lands. He referenced the Jaredites and Nephites, noting that while God provided perfect settings, cycles of wickedness led to destruction when people failed to sustain the good of others.
He also addressed the historical role of divine guidance in American governance, citing Benjamin Franklin’s call for prayer during the drafting of the Constitution in 1787. Elder Rasband noted that Franklin believed God governs the affairs of men.
Elder Rasband expressed concern regarding current challenges to religious freedom, asking who would teach values like honesty and compassion if religion is not present to help shape character. He concluded by bearing witness of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Attendees at the event shared similar sentiments regarding religious liberty. Celeste Galbraith from Orem, Utah, noted her feeling of being blessed to live in a land with religious freedom, while Tony Nisse from Provo expressed a responsibility to teach his children about the importance of American liberties.
