A driver died and a passenger was critically injured Monday afternoon after a gray sedan crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Utah Transit Authority bus head-on on Redwood Road in Salt Lake City. The collision occurred just before 2 p.m. near 1050 South, resulting in five additional people being transported to local hospitals with injuries.
Fatal Collision on Redwood Road
The crash occurred at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, according to reports from Salt Lake City police and Gephardt Daily. Salt Lake City police Sgt. Greg Wilking stated that the bus was traveling northbound on Redwood Road when the gray sedan, which was traveling southbound, crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with the transit vehicle.
While the driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, a front-seat passenger from the vehicle was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Additionally, four passengers from the UTA bus were taken to local hospitals with injuries described as ranging from minor to serious. While the bus driver was able to walk away from the collision, UTA spokesman Gavin Gustafson noted the driver was scheduled to be evaluated at a UTA facility.
Witness Describes Scene
Witnesses at the scene described a violent impact. Ernesto Bueno, a local business owner located across from the crash site, reported hearing a loud boom that prompted him to go outside. Bueno stated that upon arriving at the scene, he observed injured individuals emerging from the bus and noted that the injuries appeared severe.
Bueno also observed emergency responders using the Jaws of Life to extricate an occupant from the heavily damaged gray sedan. The intensity of the impact was evident as responders worked along the side of Redwood Road to treat passengers in the immediate aftermath of the collision.
Investigation Into Cause
Salt Lake City police investigators utilized advanced technology to reconstruct the accident. Crews employed drones to map the crash scene from an aerial perspective and used a 360-degree scanner on the ground to assist in the collision reconstruction.
Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the vehicle crossing the center line. Sgt. Wilking noted that it is too early to determine why the sedan was traveling in the wrong direction. Officials have not yet determined if speed or impairment played a role in the accident, though police stated they will review toxicology results as part of the ongoing investigation.
Traffic and Evidence Collection
The incident caused significant traffic disruptions in Salt Lake City. Redwood Road was closed in both directions for several hours while investigators processed the scene. According to Gephardt Daily, the closure was expected to impact travel through the evening rush hour on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026.
In addition to the physical evidence at the scene, investigators plan to review video footage from the UTA bus and surveillance cameras located at nearby businesses to gain a clearer understanding of the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Ongoing Investigation
The identity of the deceased driver has not been released. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the head-on collision between the sedan and the Utah Transit Authority bus.
