Eight hospitals within the CommonSpirit Health Mountain Region have received Get With The Guidelines achievement awards from the American Heart Association. These awards recognize a commitment to following research-based guidelines for treating stroke and heart disease, which helps support recovery and save lives.
According to the American Heart Association’s 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Report, heart disease and stroke are the first and fourth leading causes of death in the United States. Studies indicate that patients can achieve better outcomes when care teams consistently utilize evidence-based treatment guidelines.
The Get With The Guidelines program utilizes the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to help hospitals nationwide align patient care with the latest science-backed protocols. CommonSpirit Mountain Region qualified for these awards by demonstrating a sustained commitment to improving cardiovascular care quality.
Dr. Christopher Johnston, MD, Mountain Region Chief Medical Officer, stated that the organization is committed to delivering high-quality care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines and streamlining processes for heart attacks and strokes. He noted that these programs help teams put proven science into practice to support better community health outcomes.
Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., MPH, chair of the American Heart Association Quality Oversight Committee, said the awards reflect a commitment to caring for people in the community. She added that following these quality improvement protocols can help advance shared visions of better patient outcomes, lower mortality rates, and fewer readmissions.
Several hospitals serving Utah received specific honors this year. CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital - Davis in Layton received the Get With The Guidelines - Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. Additionally, CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital - Jordan Valley in West Jordan earned the Get With The Guidelines - Stroke Silver Plus with Target: Stroke Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.
Other recognized hospitals in the Mountain Region include CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital and CommonSpirit Penrose Hospital in Colorado, CommonSpirit St. Francis Hospital in Colorado, CommonSpirit Longmont United Hospital in Colorado, CommonSpirit St. Anthony North Hospital in Colorado, and CommonSpirit St. Catherine Hospital in Kansas.
