As of August 20, 2026, the Utah Department of Transportation announced that the 5600 South project is nearing completion. The agency planned to hold a community open house in conjunction with Roy Elementary School's Back-to-School Night to celebrate the milestone and allow residents to view project displays and learn about the completed improvements.
Final Construction Activities
Construction crews are currently in the final stages of the 5600 South project, focusing on remaining punch list work throughout the project corridor. This includes the anticipated installation of barrier-mounted sign bases along Freeway Park Drive, a task expected to take approximately one day and requiring one-way traffic with flagging operations.
During this final phase, drivers may encounter intermittent short-term lane or shoulder closures as crews conduct final inspections, install signs, and perform electrical work. The Utah Department of Transportation noted that while minor delays may occur, individual property restoration activities have already been completed, and no further work is anticipated on or adjacent to private properties.
Safety and Pedestrian Improvements
The project has implemented significant safety upgrades for pedestrians and bicyclists throughout the corridor. These improvements include new sidewalks, shared-use paths, enhanced crosswalks, and green pavement markings at select locations designed to increase visibility and alert drivers to the presence of bicyclists.
Specific safety enhancements include the installation of High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signals to provide a safer way for pedestrians to cross busy roadways. An upgraded HAWK signal was completed near Roy Elementary near 2200 West facing southeast, while a new HAWK signal and pedestrian crossing was established at 2100 West near Roy Junior High.
Raised Median Safety
To improve traffic flow and reduce severe crashes, crews installed six raised medians throughout the corridor near the I-15 Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) at the 5600 South, 1900 West, and 3500 West intersections. These medians are designed to reduce conflict points and help prevent crashes. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and use designated intersections and median openings when making left turns or U-turns.
