The University Avenue bridge in Provo has transitioned into the Phase One traffic pattern as part of a major replacement project. Traffic is currently shifted to the east side of the bridge, with one lane available in each direction.
Travelers are advised to use caution when moving through the area and should anticipate delays of at least 10 minutes during peak travel times.
The project aims to replace the existing viaduct, which was originally constructed in 1966. The new bridge is designed to meet current standards and is expected to have a service life of approximately 75 years.
Improvements include enhanced visibility for drivers and better safety features for all users. The new infrastructure will feature eight-foot-wide sidewalks and bike lanes in both directions, providing improved pedestrian connectivity from 920 South to 400 South.
University Avenue (US-189) serves as a vital north-south corridor for Provo and acts as the primary connection between the Orem-Provo area and the Heber Valley. The roadway crosses over the Union Pacific Railroad switching yard near 600 South, which also serves as the end-of-line for the UTA FrontRunner network.
Construction is anticipated to begin on October 1, 2025, with utility work starting in late summer 2025. The project will follow a phased approach:
Phase one involves the demolition and construction of the west side, scheduled from Fall 2025 through Fall 2026.
Phase two includes the demolition and construction of the east side, anticipated for Fall 2026 through Fall 2027. The start of phase two is dependent on the completion of phase one and remains subject to change.
