The achievements include individual scholar-athlete honors for both men's and women's programs alongside successful qualifying performances at Icahn Stadium.
National Scholar-Athlete Honors Announced
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced several high-level academic honors for BYU student-athletes in mid-July. On July 20, 2026, the organization named Carter Cutting as the USTFCCCA Indoor National Scholar Track Athlete of the Year.
In a parallel announcement on the same day, the USTFCCCA also recognized Jane Hedengren with the title of USTFCCCA Indoor National Scholar Track Athlete of the Year. These individual honors highlight the dual success of the men's and women's programs in maintaining elite academic standards alongside their athletic competition.
Men's Program Academic Achievements
The BYU men's program also received broad recognition for its collective academic performance. According to an announcement from July 20, 2026, the USTFCCCA recognized the BYU men's track and field team as an All-Academic Team.
As part of that distinction, 21 individual athletes within the men's program earned All-Academic honors. This follows earlier recognition in July when College Sports Communicators (CSC) named Carter Cutting and Ben Barton among 46 men’s track and field and cross country athletes across all Division I athletics as CSC Academic All-Americans for the 2025-26 season.
USATF Championship Advancements
While academic honors were being finalized, BYU women's athletes were competing at the highest level of outdoor competition. During the 2026 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships held at Icahn Stadium, Carlee Hansen-Thompson delivered a standout performance on the opening day of the meet.
On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Hansen-Thompson advanced to the women's 1500-meter final. Her performance was noted as the second-fastest BYU time in the event during the championship's opening day.

The momentum for the women's program continued into the second day of the USATF Outdoor Championships. On Friday, July 24, 2026, Sami Oblad secured her place in the 400-meter final.
Oblad achieved this advancement by clocking a time of 51.95 seconds during the competition at Icahn Stadium, ensuring her continued presence in the championship rounds.
