The Town of Alta rescinded Stage 2 heightened fire restrictions effective at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, according to a town manager's order. The decision follows a determination that moderating fire danger indices and improved weather conditions have reduced wildfire hazards in Northern Utah.
The rescission of the Stage 2 restrictions follows the removal of Salt Lake County's Stage 2 restrictions in the region surrounding the town on September 5, 2026. Town Manager Chris Cawley noted that the triggering conditions for Stage 2 heightened restrictions have changed, making the higher level of restriction no longer warranted.
While heightened restrictions were lifted, standard restrictions under Alta Town Code Section 5-3C-7.3 remain in full force. These include prohibitions on setting or using open flames, except for campfires in grills or permanent fire pits at private residences with pressurized water systems or in designated improved campgrounds and picnic areas.
Other active restrictions include prohibitions on smoking except in enclosed vehicles, buildings, or developed recreation sites. Prohibitions also apply to cutting, welding, or grinding metal in dry vegetation, operating certain small internal combustion engines without working spark arrestors, and the discharge of firearms for target shooting or explosives.
The order also prohibits the use of tracer ammunition or pyrotechnic devices within 300 feet of restricted areas. Additionally, the discharge of division 1.4G common state-approved explosives is prohibited within restricted areas or within 300 feet of them.
