Alta High School theater director Linze Struiksma has been named the 2025-26 Theatre Teacher of the Year by the Utah Advisory Council of Theatre Teachers. The award recognizes excellence in theater education and leadership throughout Utah and was determined by nominations and votes from fellow theater teachers.
Struiksma, who is entering her 15th year leading the Hawks' theater program, was surprised with tribute videos during the Utah Advisory Council of Theatre Teachers summer conference in Cedar City. These videos featured students and educators discussing her impact and commitment to community building.
Struiksma noted that the recognition from colleagues who understand the profession's challenges and rewards was particularly significant. She stated that she views the award as an indication that she is on the right trajectory.
The award recognizes Struiksma for her work in theater education and her passion for mentoring new colleagues in the Salt Lake Valley. In addition to mentoring, she has presented workshops for teachers across Utah and recently completed a master's degree in directing.
Her approach to theater includes selecting plays and musicals that encourage discussion regarding empathy, community, and social issues. Struiksma stated her goal is to help students become better humans who are kind and make a difference in the world.
As Alta High prepares for the upcoming school year, Struiksma plans to display the award in her office. She described the honor as a symbol of community and collaboration that she believes the entire program earned together.
