A petition launched on August 12 calls for immediate pedestrian safety improvements near Canyon View Middle School and Canyon View High School in Cedar City. The request comes after a student was struck by a vehicle while using a crosswalk on the first day of school, though the student was able to walk away from the incident.
The petition, which has gained hundreds of signatures, requests that the Iron County School District, Canyon View Middle School, Canyon View High School, and Cedar City collaborate to improve safety. Supporters are asking for several specific measures, including the assignment of trained crossing guards at busy crosswalks during morning and afternoon hours and an increased presence of Cedar City Police during school arrival and dismissal.
Additional requests include conducting a formal traffic safety assessment of the campus and surrounding roadways, installing warning signs or flashing pedestrian beacons, reviewing traffic flow and drop-off procedures, and educating students and drivers on school-zone safety at the start of each school year.
Supporters cited concerns regarding distracted drivers and high volumes of traffic during school hours. One supporter noted that the presence of Canyon View High School introduces many inexperienced drivers to the area, creating a dangerous environment for middle schoolers walking to and from school.
