A kindergarten teacher in the Provo City School District is using play and imagination to teach math and basic economics. According to a notice on the district's website, Cecily Clark has implemented a bakeshop stand and play cash register in her classroom to provide hands-on learning experiences.
The bakeshop equipment was purchased with the help of a Mini-Grant from The Provo City School District Foundation. Students use the tools to buy and sell baked goods, which allows them to practice counting, numbers, and money through interactive activities.
Clark has used the stand as a reward for students who finish their classwork early. This practice has resulted in students engaging in mathematical learning while participating in pretend play.
Through these activities, students practice math skills and learn about basic economics and resourcefulness. The hands-on approach is designed to help students develop problem-solving skills and a foundation for learning.
