In a classroom at Spring Creek, preschoolers engaged with new alphabet books acquired through a PCSD Foundation Mini-Grant. The veteran district teacher, Denise Johnson, used the books to help students build phonemic awareness and connect sounds to letters.
The use of books like The ABCs of Cookies allows students to participate actively in the reading process. According to the district, this engagement helps children learn to break down words one sound at a time, which is a crucial step toward becoming fluent readers.
By building excitement through interactive reading, Johnson aims to foster a love for reading and build a strong foundation for literacy. This early exposure to letters, sounds, and vocabulary is intended to provide students with an edge as they advance through their preschool years.
