Catholics from across the Diocese of Salt Lake City are scheduled to gather Oct. 10 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Layton for the annual Intercultural Marian Celebration. The event aims to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary through various cultural traditions and devotions found throughout the Catholic Church.
The celebration is intended to highlight the universality of the Catholic Church and the cultural diversity within the Diocese of Salt Lake City. According to Angel Garcia Zarate, director of the diocesan Office of Faith Formation, the gathering allows the community to recognize that different cultural expressions are part of the same family.
Participants can expect a day centered on faith, culture, and community, featuring different titles and images of the Virgin Mary, as well as songs, vestments, and other cultural expressions. Garcia Zarate noted that while different cultures may use different languages, clothing, or symbols to express devotion, they are honoring the same person.
Garcia Zarate explained that the various representations of Mary, such as Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, and Our Lady of Aparecida, are not different individuals but different ways Catholics have expressed their relationship with the Mother of God throughout history.
The event is scheduled for Oct. 10 from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, located at 2010 S. Chapel St. in Layton.
