A performance audit of Salt Lake County Fleet Management released August 24 revealed that motor pool vehicle utilization was substantially below available capacity. According to the report, 7 of 11 motor pool vehicles, or 64%, were not used at all during 2025.
The review of 2025 utilization records showed that no motor pool vehicles were used during the month of April or from July through December. While testing did not find evidence of vehicle misuse, the audit identified opportunities to improve how fleet data is reconciled and how utilization is monitored and documented. The findings also highlighted a need for better tracking of out-of-County use authorizations and take-home use authorizations.
Fleet Management has begun evaluating the future size of the program and has started a 2026 survey of agency fiscal managers, though a finalized or documented plan has not yet been established. Improvements aligned with the audit's findings are already being pursued by Fleet Management.
