Two Salt Lake City police officers shot and seriously wounded a man who allegedly refused commands to drop a knife on Monday night near 600 East and 200 South, according to a September 1 report.
The incident occurred after emergency dispatchers received calls around 8:20 p.m. regarding a man running into the road, striking vehicles and hitting windshields.
Salt Lake City Police Department Chief of Staff Glenn Mills stated during a news conference that callers described the man as displaying psychotic, violent behavior.
Officers arrived within minutes and confronted the man, who was armed with a knife. Mills said the man refused to put the knife down, prompting two officers to fire their weapons. The man was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, though he is expected to survive.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the confrontation. The incident took place in a parking lot and roadway near a Burger King restaurant. While Mills could not confirm if the man had been inside the restaurant, he stated there was no continuing threat to the public.
The Unified Police Department protocol team will investigate the shooting following Salt Lake County’s officer-involved critical incident procedures.
The confrontation resulted in a large police response that closed 600 East north of 400 South for several hours. The man's name and age were not immediately released.
