A construction mitigation grant program is available to help businesses affected by Salt Lake City-led construction projects. According to information from the city's Department of Economic Development, these grants can be used to offset business costs during construction-related hardships and support marketing and outreach to inform customers that a business remains open.
Grants range from $500 to $3,000 and are available for businesses located directly on or within one-half block of an active construction site. To be eligible, an applicant must be a small, independent business or nonprofit with fewer than 50 employees. Eligible businesses must operate from a brick-and-mortar location, such as a restaurant, bar, or retail shop, within city limits and hold a valid business license. Applicants must also demonstrate financial hardship, such as reduced access or loss of foot traffic, and provide profit and loss statements as proof of business activity.
Eligible construction areas identified in the city's notice include 600/700 N (800 W to Redwood Rd), 600/700 North work between 1000 W and 800 W, 600 S (Cheyenne St to JRT), Navajo St Reconstruction (300 to 600 S), and Elm Avenue (900 E to McClelland).
Applications are accepted year-round through an online portal, though applicants may also print and mail applications. Required documentation includes a copy of a current Salt Lake City business license, a completed IRS W9 form, and profit and loss statements from the month before construction began and the current month.
Once an application is submitted, applicants should receive an email regarding approval within 7 to 10 business days. Processing for checks is estimated to take 3 to 4 weeks after approval.
