Expanded Bus Service and Infrastructure
The newly announced plan from UDOT aims to significantly increase transit availability by adding approximately 30 new buses over the next two winters. According to Friends of Alta, the goal is to increase bus frequency to Snowbird and Alta Ski Area from the current 30-minute intervals to every 20 minutes, or potentially as frequently as every 10 minutes. This effort is part of a broader strategy to reduce the reliance on personal vehicles during the peak winter season.
In addition to more frequent service, the plan includes the construction of infrastructure such as two indoor facility stations located at Snowbird and Alta Ski Area. To further manage traffic flow, UDOT intends to implement variable tolling and bar roadside parking near the resorts.

Friends of Alta stated that while they support these scalable and cost-effective solutions, they will continue to oppose the gondola as long as it remains the agency's ultimate endgame.
The Debate Over Cost and Transit

Specific risks identified by Friends of Alta include the potential disturbance of soil containing contaminants from 19th-century mining activity, such as lead and arsenic. According to Friends of Alta, UDOT believes congestion in Big Cottonwood Canyon can be resolved through enhanced bus service, enclosed bus stops at the resorts, minor road improvements, and a winter-season variable pricing tolling system starting below the Solitude Entry 1. The estimated expenditure for these Big Cottonwood solutions is approximately $90 million, a fraction of the projected cost for the Little Cottonwood gondola.
Public sentiment appears to align with the transit-first approach. Friends of Alta reported that out of 50,000 public comments submitted to UDOT during the public comment period, approximately 80% of citizens expressed opposition to the construction of a gondola. Local leadership has also voiced dissent, with the mayors of Salt Lake City, Sandy, Cottonwood Heights, and South Jordan all on the record opposing the gondola's construction.
Ongoing Litigation and Land Acquisition
As the legal battle continues, the Utah Transportation Commission has already taken steps toward infrastructure development.
