Summit County was recognized as one of the top 15 rural communities in the nation for 2026 by Expansion Solutions Magazine, according to a report published August 31. The recognition is part of the Expansion Solutions 2026 Awards of Excellence, which celebrates leadership in economic development and business growth across the United States.
The evaluation for the ranking included an analysis of economic performance, corporate investment activity, workforce strength, infrastructure readiness, and long-term competitiveness. Jeff Jones, the Economic Development and Housing Director, stated that the award reflects the quality of the business community, citizens, and visitors. Nicole Shakir, publisher of Expansion Solutions Magazine, noted that the recognition validates the community's accomplishments and its ability to create new opportunities for residents and businesses.
In a separate development, the Eastern Summit County Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, at the County Courthouse in Coalville. The meeting will focus on proposed amendments to the general plan, which serves as a long-term framework for growth and development within the Eastern Summit County Planning Area. The commission will listen to public comment and vote on a recommendation to the County Council.
The general plan update was developed through an extensive process involving county staff, the planning commission, and community input from the Our Summit community visioning process. This process helped identify community priorities such as housing options, transportation, access to local services, trails and recreation, open space, and community character. The update aims to guide future growth while maintaining the unique qualities of Eastern Summit County.
