The Lehi High School girls tennis team finished in a tie for first place at the inaugural Lehi Ladies Open Tennis Tournament, according to a Lehi Free Press report published August 20. While the Pioneers tied with Alta and Westlake with 3-1 team records, Lehi took the top spot by winning more sets and games than the other tied teams.
In the preseason round-robin event held on Aug. 7 and 8, Lehi secured 29 sets, compared to 28 for Alta and 27 for Westlake. The Pioneers also achieved a 3-1 record in the JV portion of the tournament.
During the competition, the varsity team's only loss was a 3-2 match against Alta. In that round, Kinley Olson won at No. 1 Singles, while Liberty Salcido and Claire Thatcher won in First Doubles. Ella Gonzalez won at Second Singles, while Salcido and Thatcher won at No. 1 Doubles. Abigail Cox and Eden Waddell won their match in Second Doubles after trailing 6-7, 6-4, 14-12.
Lehi defeated Wasatch 3-2 and Maple Mountain 4-1. In the match against Maple Mountain, Caitlin Griffith added a victory at No. 3 Singles. The Pioneers also defeated Provo 4-1, with wins from Ella Gonzalez at First Singles, Sophie Gonzalez at No. 2 Singles, Sahasya Sandepogu at Third Singles, and the pairing of Abigail Cox and Eden Waddell at No. 2 Doubles.
Coach Glen Zobell congratulated the players for their hard work and noted the team's unity despite missing some varsity players during the tournament. The Pioneers began Region 3 play on Aug. 18 against Skyridge and were scheduled to visit American Fork on Aug. 20.
