The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for central Wayne County on Sunday afternoon and flash flood warnings for central Kane County, according to a report published August 30. The severe thunderstorm warnings included threats of quarter-sized hail and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.
The severe thunderstorm warning for Wayne County was expected to last until 5:30 p.m. if not extended. Meanwhile, the flash flood warning for central Kane County was expected to last until 7:15 p.m. unless extended.
Locations expected to experience flash flooding include Big Water, Wahweap Creek, Warm Creek, Last Chance Creek, and Lake Powell. The warning noted the potential for life-threatening flash flooding in creeks, streams, slot canyons, and normally dry washes.
Officials advised people to turn around rather than driving through flooded roads, noting that most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Residents were cautioned to remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain, as dry washes, streams, and rivers can become raging currents in minutes from distant rainfall.
