Authorities confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to three deaths found at two different sites in Wayne County, according to a report published August 27. The suspect was apprehended in Colorado after investigators followed a vehicle used to move between jurisdictions.
The investigation involved two separate crime scenes in rural Wayne County, including a hiking trail and a residence. The first victim was a woman in her 30s found on a hiking trail. A second victim, a woman in her 60s, was discovered at another location. A third victim, an elderly woman in her 80s, was located at a residence in Wayne County.
Investigators tracked the suspect after locating the victims' vehicle, which had traveled from southern Utah through northern Arizona and into Colorado. Colorado law enforcement found the vehicle abandoned in Pagosa Springs, leading to the suspect's apprehension without incident.
The Utah Public Safety Department stated that investigators are continuing to examine crime scenes in the Lyman and Torrey regions. The Utah Bureau of Investigation and the Utah Crime Lab are working to process evidence from the sites.
Authorities stated there is no ongoing danger to the public and no additional suspects are outstanding. Local officials previously urged residents to exercise caution, such as locking doors and staying with others in the evenings.
The Wayne County School District announced a precautionary closure for Thursday and Friday, providing counselors for students returning to class. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications.
