A new tradition is coming to Utah County as community leaders, BYU Athletics, and local organizations partner to launch a fan festival in Downtown Provo to kick off the Cougars' conference football season. The inaugural First Down Provo event was scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. along Center Street between University Avenue and 100 East on the Utah County Historic Courthouse grounds, according to a September 1 report.
The free event features live music from 19 Miles Per Hour, fire dancers, food vendors, children's activities, BYU merchandise vendors, giveaways, live media shows, and a touch-a-truck with the Provo Fire Department. Attendees can also participate in a canned food drive to benefit Community Action Services and the Food Bank in Provo.
Organizers intended for the evening to capture the excitement of a BYU football weekend while drawing families and visitors into the downtown area. Explore Utah Valley Executive Director Lee Adamson stated that the event is designed to activate Downtown Provo and showcase its offerings to both local residents and visiting fans.
This event marks the first time the BYU Alumni Association's Cougs Care service initiative will be held during a home football weekend. According to Michael Johanson, BYU Alumni Association Executive Director, the project allows fans to support the team and make a positive impact in local communities.
BYU Athletics officials noted that creating memorable experiences beyond the stadium is a priority for football weekends. Anna Metcalf, the BYU assistant athletic director of marketing and fan experience, said the event aims to start the weekend with energy and fun.
The festival is a partnership involving Explore Utah Valley, Utah County, BYU Athletics, Provo City, Downtown Provo Inc., BYU Community Relations, and the BYU Alumni Association.
Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran said the event is a win for the community, as it drives economic activity for local retailers, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Organizers hope First Down Provo becomes a regular part of BYU football weekends, combining community service and school spirit with support for local businesses.
