Nebo School District is rallying around a "Be That Friend" theme for the 2026-27 school year as students return to classrooms across the district. The initiative, led by Superintendent Rick Nielsen, aims to foster community as the new academic term begins following summer breaks.
Summer Preparation and Readiness
The return to school follows several months of preparation and summer programming. On August 18, 2026, students at Brockbank Elementary returned to campus to begin the new year. This follows an open house held for families on Monday, August 17, 2026, which allowed students to meet teachers and tour new classrooms.
Earlier in the summer, the district held a "Gear Up For School" event on August 1, 2026, at Landmark High School. Organized with support from Tabitha's Way, the event provided free backpacks and school supplies to school-aged children.
Leadership and Administrative Changes
The district has also implemented several administrative changes throughout the year. A series of administrative appointments was highlighted in the district's "Finding Nebo" podcast series, which introduced new leaders stepping into various roles across the district.
On March 18, 2026, the district announced the appointment of Matt Christensen as the new Director of Secondary Education. The announcement was featured in a dedicated episode of the Finding Nebo podcast, hosted by Lindsey Hughes and Seth Sorenson.
Student Recognition and Community Awards
Student support remains a priority through various programs and recognitions. At Brockbank Elementary, the school uses a "Bronco Best" program to recognize students for demonstrating positive qualities. Additionally, the Kiwanis organization sponsored the "Terrific Kids" program for the 2025-2026 school year, where fifth-grade teachers selected students representing thoughtfulness, enthusiasm, respect, responsibility, and integrity.
In Salem, the local City Council recognized Olivia Pugmire during a meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Pugmire was honored for representing Salem Junior High as a student who demonstrates generosity and kindness daily.
Health and Nutrition Services
The district also manages essential services such as meal applications and health screenings. For the 2026-27 school year, parents can apply for free and reduced meal benefits through the LINQ mobile app.
Health services are also integrated into the school calendar. Brockbank Elementary scheduled hearing screenings for students in kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades on Thursday, August 27, 2026. These screenings are designed to take between two and five minutes per student.
Looking Ahead
As the school year progresses, the district continues to engage with the community through various events and initiatives. This includes the upcoming Nebo's America 250 showcase, which is scheduled to take place on November 2, 2026, in Springville and Mapleton, and November 5, 2026, in Spanish Fork and Salem.
Safety and Engagement
The district also maintains focus on student safety and engagement. The Finding Nebo podcast recently addressed family concerns regarding school safety, providing a behind-the-scenes look at how district leaders manage security measures.
Academic Achievement
Academic and extracurricular milestones also define the year. In July 2026, Kailey Graham, an 8th-grade student at Salem Junior High, earned first place at the National FCCLA Conference held in Washington, D.C.
