Operation Kind Heart completed its first dog food drive for the Navajo reservation on Sept. 13, according to a Sept. 16 report. The initiative involved the distribution of 10,000 pounds of dog food to residents in Shiprock, New Mexico.
The effort began on Sept. 12 when a large donation of dog food was received. Following a successful fundraiser to cover the costs of a 26-foot Penske truck and fuel for a 517-mile trip, the shipment was loaded at a distribution center in Henderson, Nevada.
Upon arriving in Shiprock on Sept. 13, organizers found lines of people waiting since 10 a.m. The organization distributed all of the dog food within 45 minutes. The drive was a collaborative effort involving RezRoads Rescue founders Chantal and Vern, who assisted with unloading and distribution at a local chapter house. Another individual named Dwayne also assisted in handing out food, including bags for elders at a senior center.
Operation Kind Heart, a nonprofit, focuses on spay and neuter surgeries and vaccine sponsorships for reservation dogs, while also participating in transport and food distribution. Micheal T. Wells, the vice president of Operation Kind Heart, assisted with the logistics and the Penske truck rental.
The donation was provided by Badlands Ranch Pets, Furgotten Friends Dog Rescue, and Paw Partners Unleashed.
