In a notice posted to the city's website, the City of St. George announced a grand reopening event for the Dixie Sunbowl scheduled for Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. The event follows significant renovations intended to modernize the nearly 80-year-old downtown landmark.
The free reopening event will allow attendees to explore the upgraded facility. According to the city, the first 500 attendees will receive a limited-edition commemorative pin, and refreshments including hot dogs will be provided while supplies last.
Mayor Jimmie Hughes stated that the new look of the Sunbowl honors the venue's history while welcoming future generations. He noted that the renovations aim to preserve the sense of community and heritage associated with the venue's history of hosting rodeos, concerts, and football games.
The renovation project was funded primarily by the voter-approved Trails, Parks and Recreation General Obligation Bond, along with contributions from Washington County and the Recreation, Arts and Parks (RAP) Tax. The city worked with architectural firm MRW Design Associates and general contractor Hughes General Contractors to complete the project.
Key upgrades to the facility include:
An increased capacity that now accommodates 7,430 spectators, adding more than 1,500 seats.
Improved viewing caused by a strategically reduced central arena surface that brings stands closer to the action.
Modern amenities including improved bleacher seating, a new announcer booth, enhanced lighting and sound infrastructure, and updated entrances and circulation paths.
Mayor Hughes said the completed renovations leave the Dixie Sunbowl better equipped to host large-scale events such as graduations, festivals, and concerts safely and comfortably. The venue remains the home of the Lions Dixie Roundup.
