As the school year winds down, several schools within the Provo City School District are wrapping up their Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program deliveries. This final selection provides students with an opportunity to taste and compare various fruits, ranging from familiar varieties to more unusual options.
Amelia, Franklin, and Provo Peaks have completed their FFV deliveries for the year. Spring Creek, Sunset View, and Timpanogos are preparing for their final deliveries of the year, while Provost will receive one delivery this week and another next week.
The end-of-year selection features several distinct fruit varieties. Some schools will receive red flesh kiwi, also known as Golden Red Kiwi. This small, nearly hairless fruit has golden flesh with a red center and is noted for its sweet, candy-like flavor with tropical and berry notes.
Students at Spring Creek and Sunset View will experience caviar limes alongside the red flesh kiwi. These finger limes contain tiny juice-filled pearls that can be popped in the mouth to provide a sweet-and-sour citrus flavor. Timpanogos students will pair these limes with Pixie mandarins.
Kumquats, which are edible from peel to inside, will be served in single-serving bags to Spring Creek and Provost students. The fruit features a sweet, aromatic peel and a juicy, tart interior.
Pixie mandarins, a late-season, seedless, and sweet tangerine variety, will be included in the final deliveries for Spring Creek, Sunset View, and Timpanogos.
Provost students are also scheduled to receive Flamingo pears. Originating in South Africa, these pears feature a ruby-red blush on green-yellow skin and have a white, firm, and juicy interior. These will be served alongside kumquats.
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program has provided students with opportunities to explore new foods throughout the school year. These final deliveries offer a last chance for students to try fresh produce before the summer break begins.
