Weber State University secured a 30-29 victory over Northern Colorado in the season opener and the first game of the Eric Kjar era. The win was sealed when freshman Zach Smith blocked an extra point with three seconds remaining in the game at Nottingham Field in Greeley, Colorado.
The Wildcats scored on all four of their trips to the red zone during the game. Junior quarterback Devin Brown completed 10 of 20 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game in the third quarter due to a dislocated finger in his right hand. Freshman Nate Dahle entered the game and completed 6 of 8 passes for 54 yards.
Noah Kjar recorded six receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns. David Dellenbach contributed to the scoring with a 44-yard field goal, a 42-yard field goal, and a 39-yard field goal, while also making three extra-point attempts. Spencer Ferguson added 74 rushing yards on 12 carries, and Ammon Munyer had three catches for 65 yards.
Defensively, Raimoana Tinirauarii led the team with nine tackles and two tackles for loss. Chevy Robinson and Teni Worthen each recorded six tackles. The Wildcats' defense also recorded eight tackles for loss and 10 pass breakups.
Northern Colorado attempted a late comeback, scoring a touchdown with three seconds remaining to bring the score to 30-29. The game marked the first name game held in Greeley. The Wildcats' defense had previously blocked an extra point late in the first half by Ashden Oberg.
