South Sevier High School was placed in secure status around 8:15 a.m. on August 26, according to a report published August 26. The decision followed an incident involving officers attempting to check on a parolee near the school.
Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis stated that upon arrival, officers discovered Jared Grundy, a 48-year-old resident of Monroe, had barricaded himself in the basement of a home located across the street to the south of the high school. Grundy was armed and had threatened to shoot law enforcement officers.
After a standoff lasting about two hours, Grundy was taken into custody using less lethal force. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident, and the secure status at South Sevier High School was subsequently lifted.
