The Utah Summer Arts Showcase at The Covey Center featured a juried competition offering cash prizes to winners and honorable mentions. According to a notice posted to the city's website, the showcase included the opportunity for artists to have their work exhibited in a professional gallery setting.
The competition was scheduled to accept digital submissions through May 18. Gallery Director Deann Morin stated that the showcase offers exposure for aspiring area artists and typically features a wide variety of styles. The event returned to its Covey roots this year after previously splitting artwork submissions with the Provo City Library.
After digital submissions were received, the Gallery Director, Covey General Manager, and a representative from the Provo Arts Council reviewed and juried the entries. Approximately 100 entries were selected to be exhibited in the Smoot Secured and Eccles Galleries. Following the jury process, a panel of judges reviewed the art before the winners were revealed at an awards ceremony held on July 3 in conjunction with the First Friday Art Stroll.
Cash prizes were awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, along with five honorable mentions. Artists could enter up to three different pieces for a $15 entry fee per piece. The exhibit was scheduled to hang at The Covey until September 2.
The showcase served as a venue to promote local artistic talent. Artists were notified by May 27 regarding whether their entries were juried into the show.
