The Provo City School District is inviting students, families, educators, and the community to participate in Read Across the World through the ProvoREADS literacy initiative. This district-wide commitment aims to ensure every child in Provo reads every day to help them discover new perspectives and build knowledge.
The ProvoREADS program is designed to turn literacy into a year-long adventure through monthly themes inspired by different stages of a journey. Students are encouraged to establish strong reading habits, explore new genres, and celebrate their growth as readers.
To support this effort, schools and classrooms will implement monthly Family Reading Challenges. These challenges aim to bring themes to life through activities, read-alouds, and celebrations. The district stated that making reading visible and exciting is a key part of the program's success.
The initiative emphasizes the importance of community involvement, asking adults to model reading behaviors. The district suggested that when children see parents, teachers, and community leaders reading, they see literacy as a lifelong value rather than just a school assignment.
The first theme of the program is titled Pack Your Bags, which focuses on preparing for upcoming reading adventures. The August Family Reading Challenge encourages families to read in a new location, such as a park, under a tree, or on a porch, to help establish consistent reading routines.
The Provo City School District stated that building strong readers requires a culture of literacy that extends beyond the classroom and into homes, libraries, and businesses throughout the community.
