BYU's offensive depth and new players face a significant test against Arizona following a 63-7 victory over Utah Tech, according to a September 9 report.
The No. 15 ranked Cougars must rely on new offensive weapons to contend with Arizona's disruptive defense, which recently held Northern Arizona University to negative seven rushing yards.
The Cougars demonstrated significant depth at running back during the season opener, with three true freshmen—Devaughn Eka, Journee Tonga, and Legend Glasker—each scoring rushing touchdowns. This achievement makes BYU one of only four teams since 2000 to feature three true freshman rushing touchdown scorers in a season opener, joining Army, Maryland, USC, and LSU.
In the passing game, true freshman Legend Glasker recorded three receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns in the first half against Utah Tech. Kyler Kasper also contributed four catches for 42 yards.
However, BYU faces depth challenges heading into the matchup against Arizona. Sione Moa, the backup for LJ Martin, left the Utah Tech game with an injury and did not return. Additionally, safety Raider Damuni was injured during the second quarter; while he is expected to return later in the season, his absence leaves a role for backup Tommy Prassas to fill.
The upcoming matchup features Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita, who is positioned to break Nick Foles' all-time passing yards record for Arizona. To counter his passing and scrambling ability, BYU will rely on cornerbacks Evan Johnson and Tre Alexander III.
BYU enters the game as a 7.5-point favorite. A victory would provide an early confidence boost and potentially legitimize the Cougars as a contender for the conference title.
