The Granite School District Budget Development Office is moving forward with the construction and monitoring of the annual budget under the direction of the Superintendent and the Board of Education. The proposed 2026-27 budget includes a property tax increase intended to generate $15.6 million in the board local levy for operations and $5.5 million in the capital local levy for capital projects.
This revenue increase seeks to provide ongoing funding for priorities that were previously funded by one-time sources during the 2025-26 school year after a proposed tax increase was not approved by the Utah State Tax Commission.
To prepare for the upcoming fiscal year, each district department participated in a budget cutting analysis requiring plans for potential 5% reductions. This process resulted in more than $3.3 million in cuts to district department budgets to help offset state funding losses and meet needs for employee compensation packages.
Despite these cuts, several key priorities remain in the 2026-27 plan. These include step and lane advancements for educators and staff, a 0.5% cost-of-living adjustment for all district employees, and the implementation of school guardians in every elementary school to meet state safety requirements. The budget also allocates funds for K-2 class size reductions, instructional coach support at every school, and postpartum and parental leave options.
The district has scheduled two public hearings where community members can provide comments to the Board of Education regarding the proposed budget and tax increase.
A budget hearing is set for June 16th at 6:00 PM in the Granite School District board room. During this meeting, the Board will consider revisions to the 2025-26 budget and the adoption of an interim budget for 2026-27.
A tax hearing is scheduled for August 18th at 6:00 PM in the Granite School District board room. At this session, the Board will consider the proposed tax rates and increases for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
Property taxes in the district are used to fund operating, capital, and debt service needs. For a home valued at the district average of $578,600, the estimated 2026 property tax bill is projected to include $430 for the State Basic School Levy, $195 for District Debt Service, and $1,277 for all other levies.
