Utah high school programs are celebrating major milestones following the official sanctioning of new competitive activities by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA), headlined by Provo High School securing the first-ever state esports championship.
Provo High School's esports program made history at Weber State University by winning the inaugural UHSAA Esports State Championship trophy. According to Provo High School, the school earned the title through high combined points across its varsity teams, including a second-place finish in Rocket League after a six-game battle with Summit Academy and a second-place finish in Mario Kart despite competing one player short.
The expansion of sanctioned activities is also being felt in the Tooele Valley. The Tooele High School Esports team, which previously operated without official recognition, noted that its third year marked its first season as an officially UHSAA-sanctioned activity. This transition allowed the program to gain recognition alongside established activities like band and orchestra, a development following years of building the program with limited equipment.
In addition to esports, students are finding success in the performing arts. At the UHSAA State Drama Competition held in Tooele, Provo High School students earned several medal ratings for performances in plays such as The Odd Couple and I’m Not Getting Hi Wedding Today. Emmy Jensen also secured first place as a state champion in the Flowers category.
Other local athletic programs are preparing for their respective postseason brackets. The Emery Lady Spartans softball team recently concluded its regular season with a 3-5 region record, with the UHSAA 3A state tournament brackets scheduled for release on May 7, according to ETV News. Meanwhile, the Lehi boys soccer team finished fifth in Region 3 after a challenging schedule that included matches against American Fork and Corner Canyon, as reported by the Lehi Free Press.
As spring competitions continue, schools like Maeser Prep are also managing various seasonal transitions, including final exams and upcoming musical performances of Cinderella.
