An Ogden artist has been chosen to design a mural that celebrates the history of Japantown. Cole Eisenhour will create the artwork on the north-facing wall of the Multi-Ethnic Senior Highrise overlooking 100 South, with the work intended to honor the past, present, and future of the Japanese community in downtown Salt Lake City.
Eisenhour was awarded the bid from a group of four finalists. The mural will be a significant installation, featuring a base of approximately 27 feet and a height ranging between 140 and 150 feet.
The artist stated that he approached the project with respect and conducted extensive research to ensure the essence of the community's legacy in Utah is captured. Eisenhour noted that he feels a responsibility as an artist to tell this story.
Eisenhour, who is from Ogden, has developed a reputation for using colorful and multi-dimensional storytelling in large spaces. He shared that his career as a muralist began with a project on a downtown wall in Ogden after being selected by the Arts Commission. While he initially expected to work primarily in galleries, his work in Ogden led to opportunities to create murals across Utah and beyond.
