The Layton City Police Department is seeking witnesses following a fire at the Costa Vida restaurant located at 630 West 1425 North. The fire occurred shortly before midnight on July 4 and resulted in an estimated $1.2 million in damage.
Investigators are specifically looking for anyone who may have seen individuals lighting fireworks near the restaurant during that time.
The Layton investigation is part of a broader trend of fireworks-related incidents across northern Utah. The Layton City Police Department is the third agency in the region seeking information regarding suspected fireworks incidents over the holiday weekend.
In Provo, officials stated that the Slate Canyon brush fire on July 4 was caused by fireworks being used in a restricted area during a citywide ban. That fire burned several acres on a hillside, though the spread was slowed by the Bonneville Shoreline Trail acting as a natural firebreak.
The Kaysville Police Department is also continuing an investigation into a July 3 fire at East Mountain Wilderness Park. That fire prompted evacuations and threatened homes before being brought under control.
Police in Kaysville stated they have identified a group of young adults believed to have caused the blaze while shooting bottle rockets at each other in the park. While those individuals admitted to discharging fireworks but left without reporting the fire to 911, no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
