Weber School District will implement updated high school graduation requirements for upcoming graduating cohorts, according to a September 14 statement. The changes aim to align district policy with new Utah State Board of Education rules and Utah Code R277-700 while reflecting the district's block scheduling.
The updated credit framework will transition over coming school years to provide students with expanded elective and foundational learning options.
For the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school year cohorts, students must earn a total of 27.0 credits to graduate with a neighborhood high school diploma. These requirements include 3.0 credits in Social Studies and 8.5 elective credits.
For the 2028-29 and 2029-30 school year cohorts, the total required credits will increase to 28.0. This increase is driven by adjustments to Social Studies, which will rise from 3.0 to 3.5 credits to include a full 1.0 credit course in American Constitutional Government & Citizenship, and elective credits, which will increase from 8.5 to 9.0 credits.
The 3.5 Social Studies credit adjustment begins in the 2026-27 school year specifically for 9th and 10th-grade students.
Other core requirements for both cohorts include 4.0 credits of Language Arts, 3.0 credits of Mathematics, 3.0 credits of Science, 0.5 credits of Health, 1.5 credits of Physical Education, 1.5 credits of Fine Arts, 1.0 credit of Career & Technical Education, 0.5 credits of Digital Studies, and 0.5 credits of General Financial Literacy.
District administrators are encouraging students to work with school counselors to select courses that support college readiness and practical job skills. In accordance with Utah Board Rule R277-700-6, high school credits may not be used to replace middle school educational requirements.
