Jason Quiroz, a 17-year-old student at Pine View High School, has been identified as the victim of an alleged accidental shooting in St. George. Malachi Robles-Romo, 19, of Washington City, appeared in 5th District Court in St. George to face several felony charges related to the incident.
The incident occurred at an apartment complex on South 1100 East in St. George. According to charging documents, officers arrived at the unit to find an unresponsive teenager and, despite life-saving measures, the teen died from his injuries.
Robles-Romo faces multiple charges filed by the Washington County Attorney’s Office, including one first-degree felony count of discharge of a firearm causing significant injury and one count of manslaughter, a second-degree felony. He also faces one felony count of firearm theft and a charge for being a category II restricted person in possession of a controlled substance.
During the investigation, officers learned the handgun involved was a stolen Glock. Robles-Romo reportedly told officers he was removing a loaded magazine from the handgun and accidentally pulled the trigger, firing a single round.
During his Dec. 8 hearing, Robles-Romo was represented by defense attorney Jason Schatz. The judge scheduled a bail review-reduction hearing for Dec. 19. Robles-Romo has been held without bail since his arrest.
Quiroz's brother, Damian Quiroz, has established a GoFundMe account to assist the family with funeral expenses. Jake Rowley, owner of the Outsiders Baseball Club, described the teen as a hard worker and a kind person who was a member of the team for several years.
