In a report published August 31, the Lehi High School football team competed against St. James Performance Academy from Springfield, Virginia, in the inaugural Panther Classic at West High School on August 29.
St. James Performance Academy specializes in preparing athletes for collegiate competition and features facilities that are highly advanced. Head Coach Darryl Overton noted that nearly every starter on his team has Division I offers, with some receiving as many as 50 bids.
The inexperienced Pioneers struggled against the elite athletes from the Washington D.C. area, falling 66-0. However, Coach Andy Hadfield noted that the team played hard until the final whistle and competed more effectively in the second half after making adjustments during the break.
Hadfield commented that while the team aims to win every game, testing themselves against top-tier competition is valuable for improvement. He described the St. James offensive line as one of the best he has seen at the high school level and noted the outstanding speed of their skill players.
Defensively, the Pioneers' line held their own against the opponent. Coach Hadfield highlighted performances from Trey Nelson, Tautai Meredith, Sterling Fillmore, Carter Smith, and Brody Mellor.
Individual defensive contributions included:
Brody Downs: four solo tackles, 10 total tackles, and a 14-yard sack for a loss.
Trey Nelson: four tackles and a 10-yard sack for a loss.
Sterling Fillmore: four total tackles, including one for a loss.
Colt Kelley: six tackles.
Hendrix Cluff: six tackles.
Porter Hobbs: five tackles and an interception.
Paul Unga: five tackles.
Li'i Unga: five tackles.
On offense, Cam Wren was the top producer with nine receptions for 71 yards and a 24-yard kickoff return. Sam Verbecky recorded 19 net yards on three catches and two rushes, while Kyson Butterfield had two catches for 12 yards.
Coach Hadfield stated that the team moved the ball more in the second half, reaching the red zone twice despite failing to score. He expressed confidence in the team's character and their ability to move past the result by fixing specific issues.
The Pioneers are scheduled to host the American Leadership Academy from Queen Creek, Arizona, on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
