The nearly 80-year-old Dixie Sunbowl in downtown St. George has been renovated to serve as a modern, state-of-the-art community venue. According to a notice on the city's website, the facility underwent upgrades to address decaying concrete, limited capacity, and outdated features.
The renovation project was supported by the voter-approved Trails, Parks and Recreation General Obligation Bond, which passed with 63 percent of the vote. Additionally, Washington County contributed approximately $3.75 million, and Recreation, Arts and Parks (RAP) Tax funds were utilized for the project.
Key upgrades include increasing the venue capacity to approximately 7,300 people, an increase of more than 1,000 seats. The renovation also involved decreasing the rodeo arena surface to improve spectator sightlines and bringing the stands closer to the action. Other improvements include upgraded lighting, sound infrastructure, restrooms, concessions, and shade structures.
St. George Mayor Michele Randall stated that the renovation serves as a tribute to the teamwork and dedication that made the original Sunbowl possible. The project architect was MRW, working in collaboration with the City and Hughes Construction.
A grand reopening for the facility was scheduled for September 10 at 6 p.m. The city described the reopening as a free event that would include refreshments and commemorative pins while supplies lasted.
