No. 14 BYU secured a 63-7 victory over the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Saturday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium to open the 2026 season, according to a September 5 report.
True freshman Legend Glasker led the Cougars with three touchdowns, while quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns. The victory marks BYU's second consecutive season starting with more than 60 points scored in a season opener.
Bear Bachmeier completed 16 of 25 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns during his second season in Provo. He also added a 13-yard rushing touchdown. Following halftime, quarterbacks Treyson Bourget and Enoch Watson also entered the game.
The BYU offense recorded 308 rushing yards with 11 different players contributing. Glasker, a Lehi, Utah, native, scored three touchdowns, including one on a jet sweep and two through the air. Other rushing touchdowns were scored by Devaughn Eka, Preston Rex, Journee Tonga, and Bachmeier, marking the first time in 30 seasons that five different BYU players scored rushing touchdowns in a single game.
Cannon DeVries contributed to the scoring with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half.
In his debut as defensive coordinator, Kelly Poppinga led a defense that recorded three interceptions from Leach, Therrian Alexander III, and Evan Johnson. Tausili Akana also recovered a fumble. The defense totaled 45 tackles, with Jarinn Kalama, Matthias Leach, and Kendal Wall each recording four tackles.
Under head coach Kalani Sitake, BYU has moved to 10-1 in season openers and 5-1 in home season openers. The Cougars are scheduled to host the Arizona Wildcats on Sept. 12 at LaVell Edwards Stadium for their first Big 12 matchup of the season.
