A man allegedly assaulted members of the University of Utah College Republicans during a campus tabling event on October 27. According to University of Utah Police, the incident occurred at Marriott Plaza around 12:52 p.m. and resulted in two Class B misdemeanor citations for simple assault and property damage.
The confrontation reportedly began when a student approached the group's table and wiped off a whiteboard that displayed a question regarding gender. Witnesses stated that after the board was redrawn, the individual allegedly returned to wipe it clean a second time. Rylie Barnes, president of the College Republicans chapter, positioned herself between the individual and the board, leading to a verbal confrontation.
Footage released by Barnes shows a College Republican member asking the individual if they believe in the right to freedom of speech. The individual allegedly responded that Republicans should be shot in the street before tackling the student to the ground. The assault resulted in the student's sweatshirt and shirt being torn.
University of Utah Police identified the individual involved as Amber Grace. Although bystanders intervened and Grace reportedly attempted to apologize, the individual fled the scene when police were called. A University of Utah spokesperson stated that support and resources have been offered to both students involved and noted that the investigation remains ongoing.
In a statement to The Cougar Chronicle, Barnes said that universities should be places where differing perspectives can be discussed openly and respectfully. Barnes stated that disagreement does not justify physical violence and that the organization will not allow intimidation to silence their voices.
A joint Instagram post from several organizations, including the University of Utah Queer Student Union and the Utah Valley University Community Defense Club, called for all charges against Grace to be dropped. The post claimed Grace was transphobically harassed by the College Republicans and argued that speaking against transphobia is not a crime.
The University of Utah Police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
