Weber State University has launched the Applied AI Lab, a new student organization intended to provide students across all academic disciplines with the opportunity to understand and use artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to ensure students do not need to be computer science majors to explore how AI applies to their specific studies and future careers.
The lab operates under a philosophy of learning by building. Instead of requiring students to master technical building blocks before creating something, the approach allows students to begin with a problem and use AI to help develop a solution, subsequently learning by examining the strengths and weaknesses of that solution.
Co-founder Kylar Vierra stated that AI is the means to the end rather than the end itself. The organization aims to provide practical experience to students, including those who are 18 and entering the workforce with fresh perspectives, without requiring a master's program.
The lab features a distinct focus on interdisciplinary work. Examples of potential applications include environmental science students working on greenhouse emissions, art students using AI tools to build portfolio websites, or psychology students investigating human interaction with AI systems.
Co-founder Adam Yeates noted that gaining this experience would be extremely beneficial for a student's résumé, helping them develop a deeper understanding of how to use AI in their intended professional fields.
Founders plan to eventually have members tackle real-world problems submitted by businesses and other organizations. They are currently developing a platform that would allow organizations to provide projects for students to work on, potentially connecting students directly with organizations interested in their work.
Individuals interested in joining the Applied AI Lab or connecting with its leadership can do so by filling out an online form.
