BYU men's basketball head coach Kevin Young confirmed the addition of Patrick Mutombo as an assistant coach to the Cougars' program, according to a report published August 31.
Mutombo, a native of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of The Congo, joins the program following a career in professional basketball and coaching.
Mutombo was an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors in 2019 during the franchise's first NBA championship win. His coaching experience also includes serving as an assistant for the Memphis Grizzlies and as head coach for the Raptors 905 of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
Before his coaching career, Mutombo played professionally from 2003 to 2009 in Italy and with the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Developmental League.
Mutombo played for NCAA Division II Metro State of Denver from 1999 to 2003, where he helped the Roadrunners win two national championships.
During the 2001/02 season, he was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year, averaging 16.6 points per game while shooting nearly 54 percent from the floor.
