Willowcreek Middle School in Lehi has announced it will continue its current policy regarding personal electronic devices. This decision follows inquiries regarding how Utah's new SB69 impacts cell phone use at the school.
According to a message from Mr. Hill, the school reviewed the law and gathered feedback from teachers and other secondary schools in Lehi. While SB69 establishes a bell-to-bell restriction on personal electronic devices as the statewide default, the law allows local education agencies to establish additional circumstances for device use.
Under the school's existing policy, cell phones, smart watches, and other personal electronic devices must be put away and may not be used during class. Students are permitted to access their devices before and after school, during passing periods, and at lunch. School officials stated that the current policy has been effective in removing distractions and disruptions during instructional time and helps maintain consistency among Lehi secondary schools.
The school also announced several upcoming activities and programs. Archery is scheduled to begin September 16, with practices held in the gym at 7:00 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The program includes an in-school tournament on November 9. Additionally, parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for September 24 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and a picture re-take day is set for September 29.
Willowcreek Middle School encourages families to join the PTSA to support student activities and school programs. The school also highlighted its counseling department, which provides college and career readiness planning, student advisement, and support for emotional and mental health concerns.
