A driver was killed late Monday when a speeding vehicle crashed into the American Preparatory Academy and caught on fire, according to a September 15 report.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:23 p.m. near 3100 South and 3600 West in West Valley City.
West Valley City Police Lt. Steve Beardshall told Gephardt Daily that the vehicle was traveling east on 3100 South at a high rate of speed. The vehicle crossed Bangerter Highway, went out of control, jumped a curb, and struck the front of the school.
Upon arrival, police officers and emergency personnel found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered one person dead inside the vehicle. The driver's identity had not been released.
The school building sustained some damage, though Beardshall stated it did not appear to be structural or extensive. Fire officials and school administrators are working to determine the full extent of the damage. West Valley City police traffic investigators were expected to remain at the scene for several hours to determine the cause of the crash.
